As for
tire sizes, it's a safe general rule that you shouldn't go more than one size up or down if you want to maintain stock performance and handling. Therefore, a 195 or a 175 tire (up one or down one from the 185/70/R14) is a safe bet. Any wider or narrower is no guarantee.
I work at a scrap yard, and I've tried a LOT of tire sizes on my V6 camry. The stock size for the V6 is 195/60/R15. After multiple trials I have stuck with 195/65/R15 for the past year...plush, firm ride and the extra sidewall fills in the wheel wells on the car nicely.
For my I4 Camry (the one my fiancée's driving right now), I wanted better grip for the several dozen times a year she has to swerve to avoid deer/moose on the highway. I grabbed a set of Celica rims (1993 GT) and they bolted on no problem. The tires are 205/55/R15, and surprisingly they don't rub at all.
