2nd Generation st16x/18x front brake conversion for 91 camry 4cyl?

Hello everyone, I have been inquiring about upgrading my 91 camry brake system. I have found a thread about the st16x or st18x celica front brake swap, not much information is given other than it will work. These are my questions; is the swap a direct bolt on? and what parts need to be swapped other than (rotors, caliper with bracket and pads)?

Thanks for all the info. guys
P.S. going to the yard SOON!

1991 Camry dx 4cyl, 5 speed, 283,682mi

I am currently running brembo blanks and ceramic pads. Still not braking like i would like. I have also tried stock rotors and pads, and encounter brake fade at highway speeds. I travel on the highway often and i would like to be able to stop better. I don't ride the brake and I have replaced all lines and replaced fluid within the last 8 months. I love toyota and my camry, but i don't think that any rotor that is as small as the camry rotor ( even if drilled or slotted) is going to provide sufficient stopping power (for me). So if I spend $195 for stock celica rotors and pads and pull some calipers out of the junk yard for another $20 I feel would be worth it, rather than trying to find some fancy rotors/pads and end up around the same cost. What rotors and pads would you suggest atobe?

yeah but the gt4's a rare car it won't be easy to find... what kind of tires do you have? i have brembo blanks and ebc green stuff pads.with kumho esta spt.. try getting some steel braided brake lines... you can see if the V6 brakes are bigger or not.

I am running 14 inch hankook h rated tires. but the tires aren't skidding or squealing. if the tires were the issue wouldn't they break free from the road when I break.

V6 front brakes are the same as the 4 cylinder fronts.

Get some *good* pads, rear V6 disks (hubs, ebrake cable, brake line, disks and calipers), and braided brake lines. That should be plenty as long as you don't have a leak somewhere in the system.

I'm running V6 brakes with stock brake lines and haven't noticed much problem with my 280+hp Camry... It'll slow me down just fine from 120mph to sane speeds just fine, and does great at the end of the drag strip.

Edit: Alltrac/GT4 rears don't bolt on to the FWD Camry (they bolt on to the Alltrac Camry though!). Fronts might be a minor upgrade if you can find the twin piston calipers. All you need is the caliper, caliper bracket and disk.

2nd Generation

Thanks white90dx,
I went to the yard today and found a 3/99 celica gt non-convertible model: st204l-blpska and the front rotors and the caliper w/bracket work. I will have to remove the air directional/dust cover that sits behind the rotor and is mounted to the spindle and i will have to use a larger rim like 15/16 or 17. but the parts bolt right up. The caliper casting number is 57-28 3+4 which I checked and is the same for the v6 camry w/out abs.

Thanks again 90dx
