Gen 2 Camry truck?

In about another 4-5 months the wagon will be my spare "Home Depot" runner, so I was playing around with this idea. Gut the interior from the rear seat back, chop off the roof just behind the front doors & even with the lower edge of the window. Then cut off the rear panel to create the rear cab panel. Would have to use some sort of filler piece to go from the bottom of this panel to the floor. Remove rear door handles, secure doors shut, and fill the gaps. I could either use the existing rear glass, or make a rear panel & put in a sliding window from a small truck. Or just cut a piece of Lexan.

BTW: I'm driving the wagon now. I swapped cars with my wife to prolong the life of the '91. She's much easier on a car than I am. Got the wheels/tires on the wagon now.

This is the best I could do with MS Paint.

Thumbs up

Interesting idea, I like it.
Perhaps you could find an old drop-in plastic bedliner and cut it apart to form your bed.

These things are surprisingly do-able. Before my time, at the scrap yard where I work they used to have an old Chevy Astro van like that. They did exactly the same chop job you describe, but they didn't bother to perma-seal the rear doors...it's a private scrap yard, after all. Too bad it was before the age of digital pics.

Are you seriously thinking about making this thing road-worthy? Wouldn't you have to put a roll cage in to compensate for the compromised roof integrity?!?!

I dunno Tbay.... that's on of my concerns. I don't know if the body would still be roadworthy, if there would be enough strengh in the sidemembers to support the section of the roof being gone.

MROLDV8, I was thinking about that with the bedliner... would make relatively clean work of finihing the back of the bed.

And yes, I really am considering it! The old wagon has very little value as it is, so even if I scrapped the project I'm not out much of anything (wagon was given to me anyway).

Go with a roll cage (ask yer local pick-a-part yard how much; I charge my customers between $50 and $200 depending on the size and quality). The frame won't be strong enough to handle the extra stress--especially in a wagon, where you'll obviously be hauling more weight.

Oh yeah, and: if the car's almost worthless, you can make a charitable donation of it to me!

Nice job!!!!

I was doing some measuring last night. The rear panel would move forward about 53", but I think some of the roof sheetmetal could be left intact so that you essentially end up with a double-thickness roof. You'd only have to actually lose about 25" of the roof material.

I just ordered a Tacoma, so I don't forsee much of a need to do this project. Still looks like it would be fun though.

DO...IT! Just cuz you have a Taco doesn't mean you can't have a Camruck too...or a Tramry.

I should call it the Nike.... with everyone telling me to "just do it".

I'm getting a Dremel for Christmas... that would be a heck of a first project with it.
