Yet another "Starting problem"

We havew a '86 camry with 260k ish miles. Weather is drizzly here in the NW. Car was running fine when we stopped at the store to buy milk, but when we came out and try to start it up... It cranks over fine but is getting no spark to plugs. I put in a new coil, cap, and rotor, but to no avail. Any ideas what to look at next?
TIA!

Some sage advice on the Gen2 Camrys from Mike Gerber, a regular post-er on this forum and very knowledgeable guy:

check the coil inside the distributor. They have been known to be a problem area on these generation 2 Camrys, when wet or damp. They have a tendancy to develope hairline cracks that short themselves to ground on any wet/damp metal inside the distributor.

Perhaps it applies to Gen1 Camrys as well...

TBayToyotaBoy, thanks for the compliment. It is also common to have the coil go bad on generation 1 Camrys, but he said he already put in a new coil, along with a new cap and rotor. I hope it was new and not a salvage yard part; they can be a real gamble. With that in mind, I have to start thinking fuel is the issue here, and with 260,000 miles on the vehicle, the fuel pump can go out at any time if it is original. A simple check for a fuel problem would be to remove the tubing to the throttle body and spray some carb cleaner in there. Then reassemble everything and try to start the car. If the car now sputters a bit, when it didn't even sputter before, you have traced the problem to the car not getting any fuel. Now you have to do an actual pressure check with a gage hooked up to the fuel rail to varify that it is a pump or fuel filter problem. Maybe you will get lucky and it will just be a fuel pump relay. You can try to identify the fuel pump relay (I believe it's under the hood, but I'm not certain on this car) and switch it out if there is another identical, non critical relay, used in the car.

Good luck warehousedriver and thanks again for the compliment TBayToyotaBoy.

Mike
