91 Camry fan not running - NEED HEAT!!!

low and med stopped working along time ago, now other two dont work,. I checked the resistor and it seems to be fine, there is a clicking sound when I press the fan controls. **Not sure if this is related, the windows and doors are wonky- sometimes they work sometimes they dont, depending if the door is open or shut. I had to open the door and shut it to make windows work, now even that doesnt work. I dont care about that at the moment, i need heat/defog so i can see out my windows!!!
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

How did you test the resistor array? If low and medium weren't working, then the resistor coils were definitely not okay. If the highest fan setting (unrestricted, 12V) doesn't work, then your fan is shot, too. Leaving resistor problems for too long tends to lead to fan failure. Follow fredk's advice.

Do NOT buy one of those $20 heater fans they try to peddle at auto parts stores. I mean the ones that plug into the ciggy lighter. They're complete crap.

Steve
I have an 87 Supra and the fan works when connected directly, and I put a brand new Toyota replacement resistor in an the fan still won't work from the dash controls. I've checked all fuses and they are good, the relay on the passenger side foot panel is clicking when you push the fan control buttons, but no voltage at the fan????
HELP PLEASE

I'm new to this forum stuff, but did you see my question about the 87 supra? I tested the fan with direct current and it works well. Put in a toyota resistor brand new and still get nothing from the dash controls. All fuses check okay but I get no voltage at the fan connection. Any ideas?

Thumbs up

I calledaround to the wreckers and scavenged the camrys i could find. It's amazing how f%$%$** cold it can be when the wind is blowing through a busted door and there are three screws holding you back. anyway hard to find a resistor that was still intact but I did find a blower. Note to anyone in this situation, bring a star screwdriver set ( not philips, the actual star)and a slotted screwdriver set . Pain in the ass to get the last screw...come to think of it i believe the screws were also hex headed so bring your socket set as well. You WILL need a philips to get the panel off the front. Anyhoo, lurched around a bit more and found a decent looking resistor. Grabbed a few fan control buttons while I was there. I think a blower new was around 50 bucks although some place said 150 (???). A new resistor was around 50. I bought both used parts for 25 dollars. They were closing so I went home and installed the parts. Guess what? I now have complete control of my heat/defog!!!!!! Are you kidding me? I think of the money I just saved from buying new or even taking it to the mechanic. I am not a car person so if anyone has any doubts, Im telling you,go spend a few hrs at the wreckers- its an adventure and after you have heat again in the cold cold winter, you will look back and laugh at all the bucks you just saved. HAHAHAHHAHA
PS- to clarify, if your heat works on high your resistor is shot, if you left this and now your high doesnt work, now you need both parts, worst comes to worst, get a used blower and buy a resistor. while the resistor is being ordered, you can install the blower and have high heat for the time being.
Thank you, good night.
Let me know how you made out
Steve

If you connected the fan directly and it works, then your problem has to be a broken wire between switch and the restor pack, or the resistor pack and the fan itself; or with the switch in the dash itself. Get a 12 volt test light or a digital volt ohmeter and begin testing for 12 volts working backwards from the fan, until you find the problem. If it is simply a wire, you can splice in a piece of the same gage wire and your blower should be working again.

Mike

Thanks Mike,
Do you have any ideas on the best place for a wiring diagram. I have a Haynes Manual but doesn't show the 87 Supra. Do I just have to pull all the panels and the glove box etc apart...High of 28 degrees here this weekend. Yuck.
The wires disappear up into the side and way behind the dash very quickly. I can hear the relay clicking when we press the low to high buttons from the off button which makes me think those wires from the switch to relay are good. So I guess I just have to pull it all out to expose the wires from the relay to the resistor to the fan. Again Yuck.
Thanks again

suprafan,

Sorry, I don't know of any online manual for the 87 Supra. You might want to try your local library. Some libraries have pretty extensive car repair manuals, available for free. Just a thought there.

At least you can see the color of the wiring from the fan motor itself. You probably will have to pull parts of the dash out to access that wire. I really don't have any experience on working on an old Supra, so I can't be of much help. One thing comes to mind as a quick test. Try shaking the wire coming out of the fan motor and see if the fan comes on. That might at least tell you if that wire has a break somewhere along it's path. Not a definitive test, but maybe worth a try.

Good luck.

Mike
