When I am taking off from a stand still and press on the gas with the car in Drive. I hear a grinding noise. I would hear it only if i press on the gas a with a little bit of a heavy foot, otherwise I dont hear it if I gently let on it. This is also only happening from a stand still and taking off. while i am driving and i press on the gas i dont have any grinding noise.
I have talked to a few people and they said that its probably the torque convertor.
I would just like to hear from some Yota owners out there....
If others have heard it and say it's the torque converter then I'm sure you could benefit from a transmission flush. That's where I'd start.
Another thing that makes noise when you punch it but not when you take off gently, in my experience, is failing motor mounts. You can check that by watching the engine as someone puts their foot on the brake and hits the gas a bit with the car in drive. If it looks like the engine is going to come out and see you, you have a motor mount out.

The torque converters most of the time are
making whining noise, similar to electric motor. Grinding is most likely produced by damaged thrust bearing (input shaft, output shaft, differential).Check if the differential is not empty.
I know one thing, when the engine blew on my '90 Camry and I went looking for a car with a good engine to steal the engine and sell the rest of the parts, or even one with a blown transmission to swap my good one into, all I could find was other 2nd gen Camrys with blown engines...lol.

The transmission was flushed recently (6 months ago) so I did not need that. After the job I took a ride with the mechanic and he said that there is a bit of grinding but he said that the crank /cam shaft seals are perfect no breaking...nothing of that nature.....
He replaced the timing belt, drive belts, and the water pump....everything else is good to go....
The grinding noise decreased allot but it is still there....still there...We also checked to see if there was NO grinding noise when I held the brake and stepped on the gas...
He said that he does not feel its a torque converter issue...
He recommended that I use Risoline during the next oil change to clean off the heads. Also the oil change after that to use STOP LEAK for that oil leak that I have, the leak is from the head gasket.
Oil stop leak will not stop the oil leak from the head gasket, it could only clog up the oil pump pick up screen.
The oil leak from the head gasket in the area below the oil pressure switch is caused by slight flattening of the copper sealing ring around the opening in the head gasket . The high pressure oil is oozing past this ring and usually spreads over the engine block under the exhaust manifold.
If grinding noise is present only when accelerating the car, (not the engine in park or not during the stall test) and is suspected to be from transmission, the pan must come out to inspect for metal fragments) also check the front wheel bearings.
FLUSHING THE TRANSMISSION AS WAS SUGGESTED IS TOTALLY MEANINGLESS !!!
The additives such as Trans-X could help to cure shift quality/shudder complaints, but they will not fix the falling apart roller thrust bearings.
