halfshaft replacement

I've read some history on shaft swapping, but am still not clear...

89 camry 4 cyl 2wd retaining ring shafts, not bolt in's. got DS axle out but am unable to get PS out. does the center shaft come with the halfshaft or will it separate outboard of the bearing bracket that is bolted to the block?
is it easier to remove bearing bracket and center shaft as a unit and separate them on the workbench or maybe the whole thing comes as a reman unit from the parts store?

thanks in advance, this is the first Toyota I've worked and the first thing I've tried to fix on it.

The PS axle should be one unit complete with shaft bearing; the parts store would sell a complete unit. The bearing is typically retained in the housing by a large cir-clip on the side facing the PS tire and a bolt located under the bearing housing. If you have these 2 retaining features and removed them, and the bearing still does not come out it might be frozen in place. If so, you can try to force it out with a pry bar, heat it, etc or take the bracket off and work on it at the bench. The new axle will not have the bearing bracket, just the bearing.

thank you, I will approach it that way. I think at this point it may be easier to work the bearing bracket off while on the bench, it doesn't seem to way to play nice.

I've had experience both ways with the bearing and bracket. Sometimes it slides out nice, sometimes it sticks and requires an hour or two of pounding. The axle itself has no snap rings in the transmission on that side, so should slide out nicely with the bracket removed.

We wound up taking out the bearing bracket and all. had it pressed out by a local machine shop. they put the new one in and only charged us $5. that's better than 2 hours of hammering any day. Got it back together, sure is nice without the clunking up front from the axles.

thanks
