89 bearing problem 5 spd man, 3sfe engine

my 89 camry just dumped a lot of gear oil on the street. Mechanic told me the output shaft bearing (?) was failing, allowing the left drive shaft to move a bit, dumping the gear oil. His suggestion was to dump the car (221k miles) or find another transmission. This expense plus labor is not worth it. How difficult is it to replace this bearing myself, witout fancy tools or equipment?

If you are new to mechanics (basically if you go to a mechanic at all) you are not capable of repairing it.

Ugh. I do all my own work and even I wouldn't bother repairing it. Just buy another tranny and be done with it. A decent, relatively-low mileage 5-speed transmission shouldn't cost you more than $200 or $300. Keep in mind some of the Celicas back then had the same tranny. Means there are more parts out there to buy.
