Odd squealing...

Hey everybody.

Recently when I took my '85 Camry for a spin, after a long drive, it would start having this odd squealing noise, most hearable if you listen to it on the right side wheel (you can hear it in the engine bay, but the engine is loud so it drains it out). Seems like to be a belt or something. A/C or no A/C, the noise is still present. It also happens only when the car is driven for a while (no noise when cold, warm, or short distant hot).

Here's a clip of what it sounds like...most hearable when I have the camera by the passenger wheel.

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

I guess it's time for a new fan belt. My tundra would also squeak at cold startups and resolved that with a new fan belt.

For a temporary solution, you can use belt dressing.

Yea one of your belts are definatley dried up and ready to go. More then likely the Accessory belt(s) that run the A/C and Alternator...sometimes water pump.

Yea...

Looks like I'll just not use it as often...well I have not been driving it as much anyhow since I have another DD as i need front end work (CV joints, tie arms, bushings, etc, etc). I suppose when I Sum up enough money, I'll get the belts replaced along with other things.

Since my uncle didnt keep maintance record, I can only assumed the last major maintaince with the car that replaced the belt(s) was at lease a minimal 3 years ago...so I can safely assumed that it is at lease 20K.

...and I need to start looking to replace my '87 Cressida belts. I have a feeling they might be OEM since the spark plug wires were OEM when I got to them this year.

You don't need to spend too much money to replace the drive belts. They only cost $20-$30 and if you don't know how to put them in yourself, I can't imagine an honest mechanic charging more than 0.5hours shop labour to put them in...

If the belt(s) is/are so worn that they're squealing, don't drive the car at all until you replace them. The engine will not run properly with worn/stretched belts, and if they snap you'll be stranded. My drive belts generally last around 100,000km (60,000mi), because I buy them from the dealer. In your fair climate, they aren't exposed to wild fluctuations in temp so they should last.

Yea.

I'm also wanting to change all the belts too because I think the timing belt might be off a notch. I always had poor pick up from a stop...could be related to the non-shifting transmission (i think the ecu is shot), but getting right at 200 miles per tank is not fun.

i actua;lly heard the sound and thought i was watching "Apocalypse now" for a second, or the gardener was going nuts with the weed blower. Yeah that is belt accesory noise alright, that means one or more of two things: Belt needs changin' , or the accesory the belt drives, has a squeaky bearing and is maybe going to fail on you soon.

For a double check squirt a little silicone spray on the belt. (DONT use belt dressing! It eats the belt!). If your noise goes away, change the belt and clean the pulleys a little too.
If the noise is unchanged, get ready to change an accesory (p/s pump, a/c compressor etc.)

It degrades the belt so slowly it shouldn't matter. It's only meant as an uber-temporary fix, anyhow. Like, for a few days until your mechanic has an opening in their busy schedule.
