2nd Generation Coolant leak on 3s-fe

Well the last couple of days I have been loosing some coolant . There is no coolant under the car . I do have a small puddle on the block just under the water by-pass pipe . I cant tell where the coolant is trickling from but my guess is from the water pump cover .I haven't had the chance to go hunting for the leak . Has any one ran into this before ? Im thinking of just replacing the O rings and gaskets for the by-pass pipe and and water pump cover if I can find them . First I think I will make sure everything is nice and tight . I have not had any overheating issues yet , and I drive it a lot .Its a 1988 automatic Camry wagon with the 3s-fe .

Heres a picture so you guys can see where the coolant collects , that is not my engine but just so you guys get the idea .

Unless it is the headgasket, you are on the right track. Make sure you get new gaskets where it attaches on the other side of the block to replace them all. While you are there, do a new thermostat and radiator cap to rule those things out too. You should be able to replace all those things fairly easily.

Good luck!

Might also check the hoses and pipes for pinhole leaks plus the seal where the pump drive shaft enters the housing.

Cap seems fine , I know this must be a dumb question but can a bad thermostat cause a leak ?

the oring inbetween the pump and the rusty block is famous for leaking, get it apart and sand the block shiny clean and put a new pump and belt on it

Oh wow that is one detailed tear down , this picture helps a lot the number one o-ring seems to be the culprit according to this pic . You can see the little path the coolant would take to collect on that flat spot next the oil filter . Good thing I can read Spanish that guy really knows his 3s-fe engines.

Looking from this angle it could just be the o-rings on the by-pass pipe I hope its just that cause I really dont want to yank out the water pump .

the new pump will come with all the o rings, just bust out the tools, get the timing marks aligned and get it done
