I don't know how the scrap industry is doing Down Under, but in Canada it's in the crapper. This past summer I got $185 for my old Corolla sedan (around $150 per ton). Now I would only get about $80 for the car--prices are around $70 or $80 per ton. This is a bad, bad time to scrap a car...
If it's in decent shape, or if it has lots of good parts then put it in the local classifieds for a few hundred bucks and see if you get a bite. Parting out the car yourself will probably take a long time, and you would have to deal with a lot of really interesting characters from the general public. Selling the car whole means you get rid of it in one go, and you can wash your hands of the whole mess.
