USA 1990 Toyota Camry DX

Hi I'm having problems with my 1990 Toyota Camry DX A/C. When I bought the car 2 years ago everything was working fine. the fans kicked in right when i turn it on. But now the fans won't kick in and my idle is below 800rpm the only way it works is if i hold the rev at about 1,500rpm. Can anyone help me.

Probably the A/C idle-up solenoid. It is the thing on the passenger side of the firewally with an electrical plug and two vacuum hoses going to it. Test it with a multi-meter - it should be less than 100ohms. If you get a really high number (or O/L or something like that), find a good one and the junkyard and replace it.

Are there any other symptoms? Blinking A/C light or anything?

The fans are on a temperature sensor mounted on the radiator. Both only come on if the AC system is on and the temp is up. They shouldn't come on right when you start the engine unless you just shut a hot engine off. While the engine is cool, neither one should come on. If the AC is off only one should come on once the engine warms up. If the weather is cold enough, the fan may hardly come on at all. If your engine temp is getting too high and the fans aren't turning on check the fan temperature sensor.

If you haven't done so already, clean the IAC valve. Do a search on this forum, there are several good posts on this. While your at it, go ahead and clean the throtle body and the egr valve (including the port to the throtle body and the vaccuum hoses.

Australia hi i'm new

when i bought my camry 2 years ago it had similar problems. i thought it was just cos it was old and decided to let it be. until it had to survive it's second winter without using the air con. When summer came round i used the aircon for the first time in ages and it would only last 10 minutes then start flashing and stop cooling. i thought nothing of it and just stopped using the aircon for a but until one particularly hot day when i turned it on to see if it would work and it did for a few kms then it stopped again and i reached my destination and stopped the car and went into the house. when i came out after the meeting i hopped into my car and tried to turn it on and much to my dismay and great frustration and embarrassment (my girlfriend was in the car) it didn't start. i thought it was just a dead battery but when racq arrived they tried to jump it but to no avail. so they tried 2 batteries and it started but soon after it started smoking and then conked out. the air compressor had siezed up and would no longer allow the belt circuit that it was on go and so i had to get towed home. how sad. my quick solution was to take the compressor out (as a new one would cost 1000 bucks or more according to any quotes i got) and use a smaller belt and bypass the compressor. only problem is i can't remove the compressor completely cos current cfc laws make that impossible without propper degassing. my next solution is to take the wheel off the compressor (because that is in the way of the new belt). but i can't figure out how to take that wheel off because it's either stuck on from when it siezed or its got some other more complicated thing on it. anyone have any ideas how to take it off?

moral of the story get your aircon serviced before it breaks!!!!

thanks for your patience

Pip
