For a while now there's been a squeak whenever I brake--changed to newer pads and used that anti-squeal fluid thing to no solution. When I took off my rotors a couple days ago to machine the rotors, I found that the anti-chatter clips (V-shaped) are rubbing on the outer edge of the rotors! I've bent the rubbing sides up but it's still doing it...Can I take the clips off?
I've actually never used those v-clips. I just put anti-squeal shims on the pads and that's all I need. I've never had a problem without the clips. On the other hand, I can't figure out how they would be rubbing on your rotors, either. They're bent specially to avoid that, and I've never seen one rubbing on any of the cars scrapped where I work... did they come with the new pads, or were they the original OEM ones?

I would just try a new set of V-springs, although I doubt they are your problem. They are so thin that if they were actually rubbing on the rotor, they wouldn't last very long. In any case, see if you can pick up a new set of V-springs at the dealership and try them. I don't know if they sell them seperately, but if they do, they should be pretty cheap.
On some car's I have only seen them on the front of the caliper bracket (1 per side per pad). I think my car has 2 per pad (front and back). You can try bending them back out, or just get some new ones from the dealer or junkyard. I bent mine back out since doing the brakes (had the same problem) and they've been fine since.
toyomoho raises a good point. If the spring clips (that hold your pads in place on the torque plate) are worn or missing, the pads will not seat firmly. They will move around, possibly causing the v-clip to touch the rotor at its outer diameter.
In fact, very occasionally these spring clips can cause the squealing sound as they touch the rotor.

The spring clips are snug on the pad but still allow the pad to fall 'in' towards the rotor. Are they supposed to be tight that it's hard to move the pads in any direction? The clips came in a set from rockauto.com and prior to that, I looked at my old spring clips and they had the same wear marks from rubbing on the rotors too. It just kind of 'recently' happening though...
i just changed my front pads in my sv21 and one side should have had 4 clips but only had 1, today while driving it felt like my breaks were on and it smoked for a bit is this because the pads were rubbing against the rotor non stop due to not having the clips in to hold the pads?
Just to be clear here: When you refer to the four clips, do you mean the little spring-clips that hold each pad in place on the torque plate? There should be two of these clips holding the inboard pad in place, and two holding the outer pad still.
If these are the clips you mean, then you absolutely have to replace them. You can get a quick set from a u-pull-it scrap yard, or you can order from the dealer and wait a day or two. Either way, get 'em replaced. The pads will clunk around, may even get wedged sideways between the caliper and the rotor. Bad, bad news...

After taking off the V clips, the squeaking kind of went away. But another thing came up where when I brake there is a rapid chatter-like movement somewhere up front?. Any ideas of what could cause that?
Wait, haha I did take off the anti-chatter clips as they are called so I wasn't thinking straight. But yeah, even with the clips off, there is some intermittent squeaking now that I've taken those v-clips off. There's no play on the caliper, as I try to line those long bolts up. The clips are on snug also. Sigh, I don't want to buy another set of v-clips...
Argh the dealer wants $33 for the hardware kit or something like that. Should I get the Raybestos kit again or something different? I bought the Raybestos before and just took them off because of them rubbing on the rotors.
Well, since the kit includes those spring clips, you may as well get it (under $8 is cheap). I had to buy just one of those little clips from Toyota and it cost me $3. Unreal...
I'm still not clear on the reason for the chattering when you remove the V-clips. I have never used them, ever (six Toyotas and counting). And I have never had chatter from the pads.
