2nd Generation 1990 Base Model wiper switch?

My 1990 Base Model (3sfe) windshield wipers work only when I pull back on wiper lever (single action) or when switch is full-on (position #3). Position #1 (slow delay speed) and position #2 (medium delay speed) do not work. Is it the contacts on the wiper switch, or perhaps some wiper regulator? How does one remove the plastic shroud to get at the switch to clean the contacts? Could it be a faulty motor with two speeds not functioning? Anybody have experience with this?
Thanks.

Back when I had my first Corolla, this happened to me. The wipers would stop as soon as I let go of the stick; the return fuction wasn't working, and the intermittent was shot, too.

I tried replacing the combo switch inside the steering column with one that I knew worked. No go. I replaced it again with one that worked, and again: no go. I ended up replacing the wiper motor, and the problem was resolved.

I never did any further reading/research, but it would seem that the delay function is actually built-in to the motor. try that first...

motor/switch?

TBay,
Since the motor is cheaper (and easier to get at..) than the switch, you're solution sounds very good to me. But thank you to all for the help.
