1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey all, I was just wondering, did 2g camry's ever come with just a "regular" type front seatbelts? You know, the kind you just pull down and clip in? I'm talking anywhere in the world, not just us models.
If so, where could I get a set? Color is largely unimportant.
I am getting sick of messing with the auto retract belts, and they are unsafe by comparison IMO. Just so stupid.
I've got a '87 US model Gen2, and I'm 99% sure you can't swap the seatbelts around without a lot of re-work on the frame. I looked into this a few years ago with my wrecked Canadian Gen 2, since I hate the automated belts. I'm not even sure if they still work since there's no way to tell. I'm scared to death of having an accident in this car.
The 3-point belts in the Gen 2 work really well. Saved my life.
If you can confirm for sure that the three-point harness will work on your US model, I'll pull a set and mail it to you. I'm a poor student, though, so I'd need the shipping back from you. I currently have blue and grey interior Camrys at the yard where I work.
As an aside: I've never seen a Canadian model with the power belt crap, and I've never seen a US model with the three-point harness. I've no idea if the pilot holes are threaded in the inside rockers (on US models) to mount the harness to the floor.

Honda my A$$, you just can't kill a Yota...
can some one please explain? i've got retractable belts. i think.
When you get into your car, you reach over your right shoulder and pull the belt across your body and click it into the anchor by the shifter, right? That's a three-point harness. If you have a stupid door-mounted top belt that slides back and forth when the door is opened and closed, you have an auto belt.

Thanks for all the great responses so far, everyone!
I love this 2g Camry board.
Ok, so, I do think the Canadian three point belts would work, mainly because I want to put them into a Japan built '87 wagon. I recently stripped a '90 sedan for parts, and if I recall correctly, the mechanism for the auto retract belts mounted down low on the pillar between the doors. I would imagine this would be the same place you would find the assembly which would hold the three point belt retract assembly. I guess I might need the upper pillar trim as well.
I only wish I had brought this up whilst I was stripping that car, so I could have taken pictures of the chassis for reference if doing this conversion on a US built Camry. I can tell you at this point that there is a bunch of crap under the console controlling the auto seatbelts, that it looks like you can do away with after doin this conversion. I always like to simplify things if possible.
I promise to document the whole process with pictures and instructions, as I make progress with this.
Did I mention that this car was stolen again like two weeks ago, and recovered intact once again? You may recall it was stolen last December, almost to the day(Dec 23rd, 2006 1st time, Dec 22, 2007 AGAIN!). I had to blow my whole weeks salary to pay to get to back from the tow yard, since they are scoundrels. Such a bitch.(I am going to start a thread on theft deterrents/prevention soon, after I email Toyota and see what they say)
I have thought about it, but there are a couple sticking points for me:
1. I have yet to see any confirmation these would fit/work on a toyota, especially the trunk of a camry wagon
2. The whole thing about picking these types of locks with a bic pen tube
3. The expense of the locks, plus the expense of making a bunch of keys, since the wagon is like our family's "work truck," used for hauling large items, etc, and five people use it at one time or another, so thats ten keys, at like 5 bucks each or more
4. The fact that the ignition can still be started with virtually any key/key shaped object, which would likely just amount to a stolen car with a broken window next time if I had these locks...
One interesting thing I saw on speed channel on their SEMA show special:
I've been wondering lately if the 2nd Gen Camrys are still near the top of the most-stolen lists. My insurance co. told me when I bought my V6 (five years ago) that it was still in the top-ten. I'm guessing Gen 3 Camrys have taken over that title now...

well i installed em on my car.. everything works fits fine.. but i have a sedan truck.. so can't confirm the wagon trunk... i doubt you can copy the keys... they did give me a set of 4 keys though... but that kill relay looks cool too.
