1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi everyone. I'm mostly a Chrysler guy. I have owned and built a handful of neat cars, including a turbo 5 speed Minivan.
I have decided to go back to college and I needed a commuter car. So I picked up this little gem for $300. It's an 89 Camry DX. 2.2, power everything, overdrive transmission. After sinking in about $500 and a few hours labor for a battery, starter, axle, wheel bearings, strut and spring, I have a good commuter.
I picked a Toyota because I couldn't think of any Chrysler product that would give me fuel efficiency. I had a Dodge Shadow 4cyl 5 speed that only got 22mpg. Never understood that.
I get about 28mpg combined, and I am very impressed for it having 186k miles.
anyway, I'm getting sick of this no-tach cluster bs. I know the car is an automatic, but I like to keep an eye on things.
Did they make analog tach clusters for these things? How about a Digital one? my owners manual said that the digital dash was an option. I'd love to throw one of those in my car.
And; are they a direct swap? Wiring up a tach dash for my Shadow meant running an extra wire from the ECM to the cluster, which is no big deal.
(If anyone has a tach analog or a digital cluster for sale let me know!)
you can do the digital dash swap. if you find one in a junkyard like I did. My mechanic who did my engine swap wired mine in for me. I think if you search on here you'll find how to do it though but you will need the Digital Dash, Pigtails from the dash, the dimmer switch, and also the fuel sending unit which is under the back seat. That's all the parts needed after that it's all wiring which I don't know jack about.

Here's my camry ^
Current: B+G Springs, KYB GR2 Struts, Erebuni Bodykit(uninstalled), 3SGTE/E52 swap, Crane HI-6S Ignition Box, Crane Timing Retard Controller.
Plans: Here
The Analog cluster with a tach is a simple swap. you take out the old and put in the new.
Took me about 15min. plugs right up and everything.
Only extra thing I did was swap the Odometer, so I could keep track of my actual mileage.
usally the LE model has the tach.. make sure you get the the tach with the same engine as yours.. it'll be off if you take it out of a V6 camry of course... and you have a 2.0L not 2.2. unless someone swaped in a 5sfe for you but either wait the I4 tach should work out of another I4 camry

No, with my 3s-gte. With a manual 3s-fe, you can go up to 6200 or 6300 before it cuts out, the 3s-gte redlines around 7200-7400. I have V6 reverse indiglow overlays on the tach, so it only looks like I'm going about 500 rpm over redline to my passengers.

Top speed and redline are both lower on the I4 guages.
