1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
get rid of the doors.. that would save some major time... stock time is roughly 8 seconds i think
No way it is 8 seconds for a stock auto. Probably more like 10-13 seconds.
There isn't a whole lot you can do cheaply to make an auto faster. Advance the timing a bit (watch out for knock!), adjust the AFM a few clicks, high-flow muffler, remove some weight... After a few things like that, it gets expensive (turbos, motor swap, manual transmission swap, etc.).

Be honest with yourself: this car was designed by Toyota as an econo-daily driver. If you want a fast car, by a Celica or a Supra...or do what those with patience do: drop a 3S-GTE in!

Honda my A$$, you just can't kill a Yota...
Yeah its 12 sec. if you have some extra cash you can but new headers new intake new exhaust.....just small things i mean if your driving a camry im sure its because you cant afford something else (same as me) so your probably not going to be able to afford anything major. i guess you could change the pully kit too. and put a cellica head on it (if its the 1.8ci engine) just do some research and there is alot you can find
"There isn't a whole lot you can do cheaply to make an auto faster. Advance the timing a bit (watch out for knock!), adjust the AFM a few clicks"
-timing?
-what is "knock!"?
-AFM?
i'm interested so please do tell me about those mumbo jumbos.
nothing a little cant help with! But I will be nice...
timing: The relation of the spark plugs or valves to the location of the pistons.
Knock: is bad... The process of fuel igniting in the combustion chamber before it is supposed to (simplified).
AFM: air/fuel mixture
basically what everyone said above in relation to increasing power. The best you can do is to make what you have more efficient. You can decrease exhaust back-pressure, increase air flow (air filter cone mod), increase timing, and hack the computer to add more gas (richer mix). Thats really about all you can do short of turbo/supercharging, taking apart the heads and making the valves open more or increasing the compression ratio w/out blowing up the engine... but that gets expensive fast.
I don't like to be a wet blanket, but as mentioned earlier, the Camry is not designed to be quick. You would be much better off spending money towards a better platform and modifying that.

Don't modify this car just drive it daily and buy a car to modify, thats what I did but backwards. I had the modifiable car first then this Camry after trying to drive my S2000 in the snow.
