seat belts dont lock

So neither the passive restraint nor the lap belt lock on my 89 Camry. Are these supposed to be like this? If I pull on the belt really quick they should lock as in every other car I've been in right?

Is there a repair for this out there? I searched the forum and didn't find anything on this.

I think if I crash there is really no point in wearing my seat belt as it will just let me fly through the windshield anyway.

I think there's an inertia switch that locks the belts when you stop really fast (or hit something) because that's the only time mine work. Find an empty parking lot and try for yourself.

I agree...find an empty parking lot and test it via a very sudden stop.
My wife and I disagree all the time whether the seat belts work...they don't work like current cars.

You guys are right. I tried that and they do lock. I still wonder how they manage to lock if someone runs into you. hmmm...

hobie01,
if someone runs into you they definitely will lock but they "cradle" you as you move. newer belts lock for every little thing, especially when you get hit. i got rear-ended May last year and the belt cradled me as it was locking so i got no bruises nor did i hit the steering wheel. so, bottom line is you dont have to worry when you get hit.(by the way, if i had airbags they would have hurt when i did get whacked.)
