Daytime running lights

I just want to know if there is a way to disable the daytime running light on my 1991 Toyota Camry SE (Canadian car)

Ugh...wiring jobs are tricky and annoying--and they can cause more problems than they solve. I hate the daytime lights too, so when I'm driving my 91 I just leave the e-brake on by one "click". It's enough to keep the lights from coming on, but doesn't actually engage the parking brake.

There should be a ballast resistor somewhere that you can just unplug to disable the daytime running lights. If you can't find it, I can search through my wiring diagrams. I know on my WRX, it was just a metal box in the engine bay that you can just unplug.

Otherwise though, the daytime running lights shouldn't significantly affect bulb life, don't take much power. What's your issue with them? (I disabled mine because I changed to HID projectos in my WRX and couldn't use the DRL's for those)

The E-brake on my car is a more tighten so i can't put it on one click. i want to diable it cause i want to be able to turn them off when i'm parked when the car if on (at school parking lot and want to keep the heat running) and i like to drive with just the 1st stage of lights on when it dusk (not lights fully on just side lights on).

white90dx if you would, can you search through your wiring diagram for me and see if there is a way. if you can't find it, it doesn't matter i'll just leave the daytime running lights, but thanks for the help.

Well, I spent some time looking at the diagrams... Toyota made the daytime running light system very complicated!

Anyway, there is something called the "Running Light Control Relay" located under the dash somewhere nearby the ECU or blower motor (can't be quite sure from the drawings). You should be able to cut the yellow wire going to it and the daytime running lights will be disabled. Do it in a way that you can fix in has some other effect that I can see from the diagrams.

The "Running Light Control Relay" is shown as R2 and the connections can be seen on pages 28 and 72-75 here:

See my post above.

Just so you know, it is illegal to drive around with just the parking (marker) lights on, at least in California. If a car only has its parking lights on, it signifies the car is stopped and you should not drive that way. I don't think it is something you will get pulled over for, but it something to keep in mind...

hmmm i never knew that law... but if your car came with driving lights u should just leave it... cause they didn't come with it in the US for the gen2 so it must be something with canada's law ... i don't think the US got driving lights till the mid 90s

Yup, Canada got the law in 1989, and they only came into practice south of the border about four years later. Super freakin' annoying. But good at preventing creepy slasher-types from stalking their victims easily.

I'm very curious why everyone finds them so annoying. I like the fact that people can seem me from a long distance away on quiet roads, and they are almost not noticable around busy areas... what's the deal? And don't say its because you don't like replacing your headlights! They are <$5 each and take a few seconds to change.

I wanted to diable the daytime running lights because i got a new foglight kit and wanted to have the look of the fog lights on and the first stage of lights on (headlight off just side lights).

Oh white90dx i couldn't seem to find the wires for the daytime running light. i think they were warpped up cause i only saw a big black sleeved wire, but thats ok i'll just keep the daytime running lights.

Thanks for the help
