Gen1 tachometer hookup

I have an aftermarket tach I want to hook up because my car didn't come from the factory with one. How do I hook it up?

4 or 6 cylinder? Get a used gauge cluster on eBay (or wherever) that matches your motor (the redline and top speed are higher on the V6 cluster). You can swap your speedo into the cluster and put it into your car - it is plug-n-play and would look factory.

Otherwise, check the top of the distributor - on the 4-cylinder models there is a plug that a standard spade connector plugs right into.

If you happen to be interested on a cluster with a tach, there's one on eBay

Well that's a find. I used to seach for Gen1 LE clusters (LE came with the tach), but they never had Gen1 w/ tach on ebay.

Thanks I got my tach hooked up but that gauge cluster looks nice. What all years would fit in my 86? Does the gen2 one fit? and since my car didn't come with a tach is the car still wired for a tach that is if I just change the cluster it would work?

Gen1

If your '86 is like mine, which is a DX, keep in mind that on that new LE cluster, the fuel and temp gauges are flipped in comparison to the DX cluster and it will require some fancy rewiring.

What kind of rewiring? just where the plugs go in or would I need to change some of the wiring between plugs?

I think maybe the cables might be too short? The gen1 cluster (LE) will fit with any of the gen1 models; however, the '83~'84 are slightly different then the '85~'86. I'm not sure about the cables though since I don't know anybody who actually did do a Gen1 swap. I know I've heard people doing Gen2 DX clusters swaps with the Gen2 LE cluster without problems.

I don't know for sure if the DX and LE clusters have the same plugs for the back, but I do know that the fuel gauge wires on my DX will not reach to the other side of the cluster without being rewired or rerouted. I'm sure it's possible, but it might be a pain, just keep that in mind.

I love my '86, but I wanted a tach on mine too... damn DX! :P
