2nd Generation SV21 - Knocking when hot - help!

Hello all! Looking around the web it seems you guys are the best informed so perhaps you can help!

Just bought 91 SV21 4 cyl auto station wagon. Starts and runs well but starts to knock as it gets warm. Knock disapears if you floor it, but shows up particularly if accelerating gently or going up hills. Spend some time in traffic and it'll stall and be a pain to start. Let it cool and it's fine.

Rad seems to be doing its job - coolant goes round and round, temp guage never goes above half way, fan comes on when it should. Thermostat missing which suggests somebody has tried to tackle this before... Replaced rad cap and I don't think there are any leaks anywhere.

Looking at past threads it appears this could be any one of a number of things. Any suggestions where to start looking?

Cheers,

Mark

im wondering if the fuel/air mixture ratio has anything to do with it since it goes away when you floor it.

Yup.

Check the timing using the correct technique and make sure it is at 10*BTDC. (warm up car, jumper TE1 and E1 in the check connector, then adjust timing)
