The water pump on an I4 is driven by the timing belt. If it siezes the timing belt can be damaged (look for chipped or broken teeth, that may have been what caused the noise). Of course, without water flow the engine should overheat as well. If the water was pouring from the timing belt cover area you probably have a bad water pump. Obviously, don't drive it until you fix it.

Often, it's the loose screw between the steering wheel and the driver's seat that needs to be fixed first!
