Gas Mileage

Hey guys I have an 88 Camry, i've had it for about 2 months or so, and I just checked my gas mileage last time I filled up, it was mostly city driving but it was 20.37 mpg, it seems to me that that is horrible, does anyone know what the ave mpg city and highway is? Thanks for looking.

well I got a '90 camry that goes from my dad's house in NJ going to Southern DE. All that takes a about half a tank or lil over. In the city......not for sure really, since I am never stuck in traffic.

I have an 89 and I get 33 mpg on the hwy. I say once I get a few more things done like tires, alignment, and what not I will be getting around 35.

So, yeah, 20 is pretty low for city.

I figure it should be higher, mine is a v6 but 20mpg is horrible, the tire pressure is fine in all 4 tires and I had put in a new air filter as well... I dunno what else to do. I guess just suck it up.

My guess is the catalylic converter. How many miles? Tire pressure may drop it a couple of miles per gallon but yours should get high twenties. Also clean out the intakes and make sure it is tuned up.

My 2.0 auto gets between 22 and 26mpg city (depending on NORM or PWR settings on the ECT). On the highway it gets over 30mpg.

My V6 is an absolute gas pig in the city, because I'm not capable of driving it conservatively (if it was an auto I might be able to...)
I get around 20mpg city and 26-30 highway in the V6.

Even if your tire pressure is fine, things like wheel bearings and dragging brakes (and alignments, as mentioned) can affect mileage. Clean out your throttle body.intake plenum; check the EGR for proper functioning. And as always a general tune-up can help a lot.

My former 2.0 auto, station wagon with leaking exhaust valve and gutted cat gave me 24 mpg (14 mi average trip distance) . After the cat was replaced to pass the smog it makes about 21 mpg now (city, short trips-new driver)
