hard starting after car sits

I have an 88 camry with the 2.0 4 cyl engine, a member of my family has been driving it for the past few months and during this time, it started to have a hard time starting after it sits for a while, i first suspected a fuel filter problem but it is getting enough gas past the filter, and i have ran injector cleaner thru the system. the car has a nice healthy spark and will run fine once it starts..... what i am thinking is that i have a problem with the cold start injector. usually to get the car started, i have to crank it a first time without any firing or attempts to start, but then the second time i crank it it will start rite up. any suggestions on what else i should check? thanks

Check the cold start time switch. It's what activates the cold start injector. It might be out of range and not telling the ECU that the engine is cold. If you are standing in front of the engine, it's on a water port to the right of the cylinder head. It's the one under the brown plastic connector. To test it you will need a digital volt/ohmeter and the specs from any manual.

Actually the engine should be a 2.2L if its a 3sfe.

I would check the dist/cap/rotor and make sure all the contacts are clean and there's no oil in there.

Also pull the spark plugs and clean them up or replace them depending on their condition.

Also the injectors may be leaking or the injector circuit leaking down. The result is it is now taking a little time to build up fuel pressure.
