USA New / Used Camry

So I purchased an 86 Camry, not sure of the model/package. It's very clean inside. No leaks, clean fluids, just a nice car for about 300.

It's got a few issues of minor maintnance that is required. I did notice while under the car I saw one of the CV boots are torn so that's getting replaced. I do have an issue when at speed there is a light clicking that increases with speed when I give the steering wheel a light amount of turning pressure to the left.

My hunch is tie-rod ends or ball joints, but not sure. Any ideas?

Second question, I am going to be looking for a new speedo head / cluster, any leads on where to go? Will the LX digital one work with this car? Will the diesel one work as well? Just curious if it's anything like an old 4runner cluster where you can swap w/ an sr5 cluster or not.

By the way, great board guys, really informative.

the clusters will swap as long as the motors in both cars are the same

These 2 issues could be related, especially if the torn cv joint boot is on the right (passenger) side of the car. If the boot is torn and the car is driven that way for a while, all the grease is thrown out of the joint. Then the joint itself begins to wear. The result is a clicking noise from the joint when turning the steering wheel to the opposite side of the torn/worn joint. Turning the wheel to the opposite side transfers more of the car's weight to the worn joint.

Replace the complete CV, not just the boots. The clicking noise is a worn CV from getting dirty with the torn boot.

Gauge lusters are generally plug-n-play. The digital cluster and the cluster from the diesel will not work in your car though. Well, the digital cluster will work with a bunch of wiring...

for the 4runner it wont work perfectly because the base model wasnt wired for oil pressure on the SR5 cluster. i believe the camry should work.

The digital cluster has completly different plugs on the back. Ask me how I know.

All the wires are the same colours but you will need the plugs that go with the digitronic. Oh yeah, you need the furl level sender too (under the rear seat), since the digitronic is not compatible with the standard anologe sender.

I have not gone with the Gen1 cluster swap since I can't find any Gen1 LE in the junkers. I want the Gen1 LE one because of the tach...

Another guy here just got a LE cluster. You can ask him if you got any questions since he just got his cluster and is about to install it.

dash change

I so need to get CV joints for myself...click click thump click click ...the sound of terror...
