use the OEM filters...if you don't think it's big enough... then consider this.. the 5sfe is 2.2L and it uses the same filter... the 3sgte is the turbo engine and it also use the same filter...

The 89-on engine block will not accept bigger filter as the ribs on the block won't let it go in.
I tried the bigger filter on my 87 Camry but it made no difference, and it was much harder to remove it.

yeah, i was thinking the "rib" material might be a problem...i was hope-ing to increase the oil capacity alittle as well as the filtering area..i guess i'm outta luck.

Actually the early ST165 3S-GTE uses the same filter as Toyota's V6's (the YZZD1) and the later 3S-GTE uses the taller version of the same diameter as the 2S-E/3S-FE, etc. This is the YZZF1 instead of the YZZF2. It's the same diameter and mounting surface, just slightly taller.

It was used on the 1988+ 4A-GE, the 1990+ 3S-GTE, the 2ZZ-GE and the AZ-series engine.

Any particular reason for trying to fit a larger filter?

If you're absolutely dead-set on getting a larger filter, you may want to look into getting a generic oil filter relocation kit. I put one on my Civic because the oil filter was a huge pain to get to without having burning hot oil drip down your entire arm. Now I rock a big ol' Fram PH8A sized filter, or the "shortie" version if I remember it at the store.

For $35 or so the relocation kit works well. I've been using it for three or four years now.

i used one of those relocation kits on a 88 Nissan 200sx SE...VERY HARD TO CHANGE THE Stock FILTER!!...it helped but one of the relocation hose blew and almost ruined the engine
..its not worth it for the 2.0 Toyota becuase the filter is so easy to access...i just want a slightly longer filter to replace the stock one to gain filtering and oil capacity.

Under normal to mildly extreme conditions that car was designed to work with the stock size filter. You are just using more oil, you are really wasting all around, more for the filter, takes more time to mess with the larger filter, more oil.

I had a '85 corolla GTS and I had a few extra filters on the shelf when I sold the car. At the time I was driving a '90 tercel and they fit in there. They where about the same height but fatter. I think most of the Toyota filters have the same thread and hole size. And even though the filter might be bigger in diameter, the gasket is still close to the inside and should still hit the flat sealing surface on the block.

The larger filter would take longer to fill on a cold start, increasing engine wear. If you keep up with your oil changes, keep the stock filter size.

I will be moving up to a larger filter on my 3s-gte (it has a relocation kit) but that filter does not empty after the motor is stopped so it has no cold-start oiling issues.
