Tail Lights out!!? -Bulbs are Fine- '91 V6 LE

I was pulled over last night for not having tail lights, but they let me off with a warning.

This morning I tested the bulbs; they're fine.

Are the tail light fuses located under the dash with the others? I don't have the fuse diagram, so I'm lost.

Look under the cover of the fuse block (check the one at your feet first, then the one under the hood if need be), there's a diagram on there showing which fuses are which...

So am I getting this right, that the cop claimed you had NO tail lights at all? And that you tried them today and they worked? Or do you mean that they're all off but that the bulbs are good? How about reverse lights? Turn signal lights?

If your fuses check out to be OK, then I would next check the loom of wires inside the trunk, by the driver's side trunk hinge. The wires inside there have a tendancy to frey and break from all the flexing they are exposed to when the trunk is constanty opened and closed. Open up that loom and look for freyed or broken wires. Repair as necessary.

I meant that I'm getting NO tail light, but the bulbs are still good. I checked the underdash fuse and it tests okay, too.

I'll check out the trunk loom tomorrow and let you know how that goes. I'm guessing this is a common problem?

The brake light bulb is probably a dual filament, either one filament is blown on that bulb, or you need a new stalk switch? also check the fuses too.

Make it easy and just get new bulbs and try it. The bulbs are like what $3 at walmart? If that still doesn't work then check your fuse. If that's OK then check your wires.

The bulbs, underdash fuse, and trunk wire loom are all in good shape. I guess there might be a short somewhere else in the wiring...

so this morning i got curious anf fiddled witht the radio and cigarette plug, i also wrapped elictrical tape around the clutter of wires. Apparently the brakes seem function correctly.

Should i leave this alone since all is fine?

I've seen this before.

I suspect your taillight sensor module has been cooked. Caused by putting a single filament bulb in a dual filament slot. Check all your bulbs to verify they are correct for the slots then check the module (yellow box) which is next to the fuel filler under the left rear quarter panel.
