1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
There are no common engine swaps for your car. I haven't seen pictures or heard of anyone doing one... Seriously.
if you had an '87 or later, you would be in a better position (I have a 280hp+ motor in my '90 Camry which will soon be swapped to my AWD Camry).
FWD to RWD won't work unless you just want to put the Camry body on another chassis or something. Don't even think about it anymore. If you want RWD, buy another car.
My suggestion would be to buy another car if you want performance... The money it would take to make a gen1 Camry fast could be used to buy an already fast, sporty car...

Ok, that's an idea, but I really want to know more about the possibilities instead of the practicalities.
My last sports car was a 06' Z, and i really want to surprise Sacramento with a RWD 85 Camry. Because the car is light, and the frame is strong, and if we can shove a driveshaft into the dang thing than it would haul all day long.
All i need is a RWD v6, does Toyota make that? Cuztomization of the driveshaft and axles can be done, I just need a phone number, know what i mean?
Can i do a 6gear celi swap from the new gens?
The question is what's the setup, and who is willing to do it.
White you mentioned having a AWD camry, what year? Is the motor from a GT4? Isnt the GT4 the toyota rally car from the nineties? My buds think If i were to go FWD, RWD, or AWD that the GT4 would be the one.
Ok, checked around, a v6 would be redic, and a rwd just isnt really possible like you were saying white.
So with that in mind I am thinking a nice b16 drop from a integ (my friend dan owns like 6) could work. A vtec honda motor in my old ass camry would be so sick! hahahaha
Ummm... how much money are you going to throw at your '85 Camry?
Toyota makes a number of RWD 6-cylinder platforms, IS300, Supra, Trucks, etc... None of which would really fit. (have you looked at where the steering rack is, even?). That, and everything underneath the car would have to be custom. If I had to guess, a shop would charge $40k+ to do it halfway decently. No phone numbers for that, I do all my own stunts, I mean... work.
You can do whatever swap you want. But I'm telling you, anything you do will have to be completely custom. The closest to bolt-in would be a 3s-gte Celica/MR2 turbo motor. The swap that I did on my Camry (and the one I will do in the near future to the Alltrac Camry) are near bolt-on affairs with only wiring to worry about.
My AWD Camry came that way from the factory. It is very similar underneath to a Celica Alltrac/GT4, but currently has a 115hp 4-cylinder motor and an auto transmission. I have all the parts for the conversion to the equivalent of a '95 JDM Celica GT4. If I build it right, I might have a 12-second Camry...

PS. The motor in your '85 Camry is a 2s-e

It's not even half-way feasible, but the 7M-GE in the Cressida is a RWD straight-six...
