Hey Everybody...I'm a newbie

First off, let me say this is the coolest place to have found on the internet!

Toyota Nation rules! And I just got here.

I just bought a 1990 Camry, 2.5L V6....99,100 miles on it.

I'm here to really get to know Sammy (Had to name it...Hmmm, I wonder what 18 equals in Toyota years?).

Question...The check engine light came on for the first time last night. I was wondering what are the best steps to take at this point to make sure everything remains in good running condition?

I am not certain if you have an OBDI or OBDII port. The V6s (1MZ-FE) changed over to OBDIIs sooner than the I4s. Basically, to read an OBDI error code you jump terminals TE1 and T1 (most of us seem to prefer using a paperclip) in the diagnostic port. Turn the ignition switch to the on position [w/out starting the engine] and read the CEL blink patterns. It’s kind of like morse code. Post the code here and someone should be able to tell you what the code means.

This shows you the diagnostic port:

This explains how to read it:

For the life of me, I can't seem to locate the OBD port (boy do I feel sheepish...).

Where, under the hood, would it be?

Nevermind after saying to myself...No way am I gonna give up on this search...I found it.

Stay tuned for the codes.

I think I read another post that someone wrote...it was kind of hidden by a little grease on the driver's side under the hood near the top, just to the right of the valve system (BTW, this description is simply to help the next person who is hunting for the OBD-I port).
