How do you remove the PS pump?

Hello all,

I'm trying to remove my PS pump (I have the Haynes manual) and cannot figure out how on earth to get that thing out of there. Does anyone know how to remove it? I have a '91 Camry with the 3SFE and 5-spd manual.

Thanks!

Remove the tensioner bolt, the pivot bolt and the lines, then rock it out... You will probably want some ratcheting box-end wrenches to get in there to reach the bolts.

The pump is removed with pressure and feed hoses attached.
The pump needs to be removed from under the car
  • Lift the front of the car and put it on the jack stands
  • Remove the right front wheel
  • Remove suspension crossmember
  • Remove the drive belt
  • Disconnect the pressure hose near firewall and the feed (the fat soft hose) from the fluid reservoir [do this before lifting the car] AND TWO VACUUM HOSES FROM THE BOTTOM OF STEERING PUMP.
  • Unbolt and remove pump.
  • Transfer the hoses to the new pump.
Note: if pressure hose is old it will be less pain to use the new hose.
You may wish to search my posts about special belt tool (wrench) and the pressure hose replacement.
Hope this helps

In my experience, removing the axle was very helpful. Also don't forget to buy new copper gaskets for the high-pressure hose.
