OBD-I Code #71

Hi...As discussed in an earlier thread, the check engine light came on in my 1990 Camry LE (V6).

After running a test on the OBD-I, the Toyota morse code indicates: 71

I was wondering if anyone knows what code 71 means.

~*Happy driving!

This code is for EGR system problem.
On V-6 engine:
the carbon plugs up the hole in the intake plenum where EGR valve is attached (remove and clean);
Inspect the vaccuum modulator, blow into the port on the bottom of it: if air passes-replace ;
inspect the ported vacuum switch (BVSV) if it is broken ,replace

Inspect the hoses going from the EGR to the modulator valve as well. The one on the bottom often gets clogged up with carbon.

If the EGR valve itself is clogged up with carbon you may be able to chip it away with a small screw driver. Just be careful not to damage the diaphragm. Also, look down the tube that the EGR is mounted to. It doesn't need to be spotless but it does need to be able to pass exhaust gasses.
