Any Squealing Problems With Front Brake Pads From Advance Auto??
Hi Guys, I am about to replace the front pads and rotors on my 4 cyl. 2000 Solara SE this weekend. I was going to use pads and rotors from Advance Auto. I just want to make sure they will not squeal, I am not looking for a performance pad just a good quiet replacement. I know everyone recommends OEM pads from the dealer but I want to try out the pads from Advance Auto. So if any of you are using pads from Advance Auto please let me know how you like them and if you have any problem with them squealing, that is my main concern is that they are quiet. Thanks a lot for your help, I appreciate it.
I've used a lot of different pads from various manufactuers over the years and what I found to be a key in quiet brakes are to make sure that the pad shims are replaced when brakes are done.
I've bought OEM shims to go with aftermarket pads.
Also, making sure to clean and grease the pad support areas (replace if necessary) is important.
On the rotors, you can save a good sum of money if you just have your existing rotors machined if there's enough material left.
Make sure the brake pads are bedded properly and you should be set.

Thanks a lot for the reply Tom. When you say the "pad support areas" you mean where the back of the pads make contact with the piston and caliper right? I've owned the car for just over a year and I am replacing the rotors because the car has 113,000 miles on it and I do not know how many miles are on these rotors (which are slightly warped), so I figure it will be smart to just start fresh with a new set of rotors. Again, thanks a lot for your suggestions. Take care.
When you look at the brake pad, you'll notice what looks like "tabs" on the left and the right sides. These tabs are designed to slide against a pad support plate, which sits inside the torque plate.
A lot of Toyotas make a clicking sound from the brakes sound when you're applying brakes after changing the direction of the vehicle - my 2000 Camry included. This is because the brake pad shifts slightly inside the torque plate.
There's a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) BR004-00 titled "Brake Pad Clicking Noise" applicable to all models '90-'00. Toyota sells a disc brake caliper grease (50g pack) part #08887-80609. You can also buy similar grease at your local auto parts store for a minimal price.
Stock rotors are incredibly robust. I can usually get them machined twice before I pitch them. If you take your rotors to the auto parts store, they will measure them for free to see how much run-out and meat you have left.
May want to consider.
Here's a bigger overall pic of the area

advance auto has something called Wagner thermo quiet. their shims and brakes comes in one. in another word its glued together and painted over and its just one unit. Wagner doesn't recommend putting disk brake quiet but i put them any way. its red stuff that you apply back of the pad.
I had those Wagner's in past, when half worn they started squealing, so i changed brake pads to Hawk HPS - no squeal at all. my brake noise is not related to squealing at all, neither is that TSB - it's about CLICKING/vibrating when you change the car's movement direction at full stop (from Drive to reverse or vice versa). it's caused by brake pad shifting a bit in fitting plate when you shift gears between forward vs reverse and clicking comes from pad hitting caliper piston.
I had this problem with Wagner in past, now i have same clicking problem with Hawk HPS, both of them have a shim on the back. even though Hawk HPS has rubber shim glued on back, the noise is still there (Wagner had non-rubber shim glued on back).
This weekend I will apply Permatex Ultra Disc Brake Caliper goo on shims and also have new fitting kit (those pad mounting plates installed in the torque plate) from dealer. hope it helps.

thats why i apply disk brake quiet, no matter what kinda pads i get. i know wagners are not as good as bendix pads that advance auto use to have.
