Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
ok, short story is that a tornado hit my very clean and stock 86 camry. I know this thing is a gem because its only got 78k miles on it right now and they last forever... so we decided to keep it and just fix it back up to maybe a show room type car. but still a daily..
soo my question is.. lowering springs? are there any for the 86 model year.. and if not. what would be the best springs to go with. would the 86 corolla springs work? and also what do you guys think about swaping a 3sgte in.
would the motor mounts match up?
and if you want some older pics of the car before the damage just lemme know and ill post some. thnx for reading.
Sorry dude for the tornado damage! About the springs on that Model I have no idea! U may try Tire Rack and ask them! I don't think I've ever seen an 86 lowered! U might try to post in the General discussionl section, maybe some there would know...sorry I can't help ya!
Welcome to TN ,and yes! post pics!

thanks man.
yeah the tornado really sucked. like it was really only minor damage. but our town was devastated. but luckily no one died. haha. just alot of material things were lost.
but yeah ill post some pics. id hate to take pics of it right now. 2 windows are still out. i have 1 in my trunk and one we are still searching the junk yards for haha. but im gonna turn this thread into my project thread. and since there arent any nice gen 1's on this whole site (please correct me if im wrong id love to see some nice ones) im gonnna try to be a leader and take this car and turn it into something awesome.
AstroVannin knows about lowering stuff on 1g's. I think u can use 5th gen Celica suspension or something. Just wait for him to chime in.

Oh gosh, that sucks. It could have been way worst, eh?
There's not too much Gen1's around here...sadly. I'm a fan of the Gen1, I own a '85 with 148K. Needs front end suspension work, but it still goes to point A to B without much issues.
I never had the time to post my pictures...only stock though.
a little update, as of right now all the money i was gonna put on the car, is going to my prom weekend..
but here are the ideas/plans i have for the car in the next few months.
Performance
auto transmission cooler
degreasing the engine
re-grounding the engine
installing a better CAI system
and a new exhaust, both are sitting in my closet.
Suspension 5th gen celica springs, most likely megan racing
some KYB shocks & struts
new brakes
and new wheels, currently looking at the rota slipstream, 16x7.. good fit ?
Exterior i want all the chrome to be painted flat black, matte finish.
except the toyota emblem on the grille
metallic gunmetal paint
windows tinted
new halogen bulbs.
and maybe fender flares, to make sure the wheels are flush.
Interior i want to clean up the carpet, or get new carpet installed
Gt Grant wood grain type steering wheel, and quick release hub
maybe new seats in the future.

love some feedback.
especially you astro!
Sounds pretty good, and yeah dunno where that dood is lol. He seems to like to chime in on the 1G threads.
For wheels I'd try to stay to 15's and below. I wouldn't wanna have my car try and push around 16's. The car is slow enough as is lol.

I used to own of the those, same color too. 43mpg highway running synthetic. I gave it to my parents when it hit 200,000. They gave it to my sister when it hit 300,000 and got a new Camry in 1998 which has another 200,000 and still going strong.
You are going to hate my recommendation. Put only as much money into the vehicle as needed to keep it running good. Tires and wheels are a nice upgrade, as are brakes, but don't upgrade until you actually need tires or brakes. Refer to Tire Rack for wheel and tire sizes to accomodate your Camry. Your vehicle should already have halogen bulbs. Tranny cooler is unnecessary as the tranny doesn't run hot. Putting a whole lot of money into a car that has minimal value is why I recommend you don't do anything more than needed.

haha yeah, you called it.
Its not that i hate this idea. Its just that since no one, and i mean NO one is doing anything to them, it inspires me too. and since it only has 78k miles, and it get so much mpg, ill drive this car for many many years. Its already like 22-23 years old. Almost vintage. If it wanted to go fast and drift and stuff like that I would of bought a 240 or some civic a long time ago. I want to keep this car, and make it a individual. so thats why im doing the upgrades, and making it look nice.
The car has alot of value too me. I came home from the hospital in it when i was first born. and now i own it. Believe me i don't want to harm the car in any way, and the tires and rims i do put on it will be camber adjusted so they wont mess up anything else.
as for an update on the rims&tires.
Im thinking of going with the Sportmaxx 002's now in a 15x7. I love the deep dish look, but they only come in a 4 lug at the 15' size. :[ and the tires are gonna be the 205/55/15 Falken Ziex. The rims and tires will be last though so i have a long time to decide.
