2nd Generation First time Camry owner, suggestions?

I just bought my daughter a 91 Camry, it seems to be a great car and we are very happy with it's condition. It is the 2.0 with the electronic automatic.

It has 180K and has been well maintained.

What things should I check and replace going forward ? On my list to do so far is Timing belt, waterpump, idler pulleys, belts, hoses and fuel filter.

I see on ebay that they sell a timing belt kit, are they any good?

Thanks in advance!

Bill

Most of those you listed just need to be changed on a certain mileage. Don't bother changing it if the other owner has taken care of the car / changed it recently. Just do a quick visual inspection. If you are sensitive to cars, you can really feel the problems while driving these cars. Check the sparkplugs and for leaks. Its been 20 years for me, 300000km's original fuel filter, and I still have the same performance and fuel mileage. Just put good gas in it, and a fuel injector cleaner / seafoam once in a while.

Depending on how hot it gets in NC id make sure the transmission is in good shape and the fluid isnt getting to hot also. i quick auto cooler would fix that. there are universal kits everywhere on the net.

Not sure if this is your first toyota or not, but getting genuine Toyota parts from the dealer is VERY worth it. To give you an idea, factory plug wires from Toyota will last upwards of 180K miles, plug wires from Kragen will last you 50K if you're lucky. Same goes with starters, alternators, water pumps, etc. The part from toyota will cost you twice as much, but will last 4 times as long.

Also, always run either NGK or Denso plugs, NEVER EVER EVER use Bosch, especially their multi-electrode plugs! Don't let the parts counter guys ever upsell you on this, and if you take your car to a mechanic, make sure they don't get upsold either.

At 180k miles, I would strongly suggest replacing the shocks; good shocks increase handling, acceleration, and decrease stopping distance. I suggest Monroe Sensatracs for 90% of drivers.

Hope that helps!

i found the motomaster spark plug wires do good in this car too. they're quite cheap at canadian tire. and when i bought them they were made in japan, a little more info, they were made at a denso plant from what i know.
