1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
and it looks like the front floorboard is flat all the way across, is this how they used to be??
Yea, they are a bit underpowered with the only option being the 2SE engine. None the less, the 2SE engine (and the Gen1 Camry in general) proved to be extremely reliable...although lacking power.
The picture in the 4th page looks like the floor board is flat, but it isn't. There's hills and bumps (i.e. center console).
Thanks for posting. It brings back a lot of memories.
My dad bought a brand-new '84 LE sedan in brown like the one in the article. The performance left a lot to be desired, but for a 13 year old boy at the time, I was completely blown away with all the technology at the time.
EFI, ECT, cool stereo with 7-band graphic EQ, Cruise, 2-mode A/C, etc.. It wasn't fast, but not terribly slow for the time, quiet, got good fuel economy, rode very well.
That car left an impression. I bought a gen2 and gen4, my dad bought a gen3 afterwards.

No problem.
Yep. The Camry left a big impression for me indeed. My dad had a '86 DLE which he traded in for a '98 Corolla LE at a toyota dealer. Figured it didn't have much life left in it (this was back in 2005), but apparently somebody bought it and is still using it till this day. Currently I have my grandparents '85. Needs repairs, but these things are the backbone on what the camry is now. I bet most people now days when they look at the Camry, they can't believe how small it first was. I love this camry due to the interior room to size this thing has.
I got a '83 Camry booklet coming in (at lease it should be soon) and I got an '86 booklet. The problem is that I can't seem to scan it without causing so much hasle. I got too much things around my scanner.
