K&N Air Filter?

Hello everyone, I've got a 1990 Camry with a 3S-FE 2.0L engine. It runs quite well for my purpose, but I was hoping to get a little more low speed acceleration out of it and maybe some increased gas mileage. I was looking into getting the drop in K&N air filter. I've heard stories of the oil used on them messing with some cars, and I'd rather look into it before making the purchase. I want to know if you think any performance boost is worth the cost and that I won't end up messing up my engine. My car has just under 190K miles, and new transmission that was put in a few years ago. And also, something I've just always wanted to know, but could never find, how much horsepower, in general, does a stock 3S-FE 2.0L have? Thanks!

I haven't heard any problems with the oil in the airfilter, just make sure its soaked, but not over wet and you wont have problems. I'd just throw in a cone filter instead of a drop-in. it does a better job

A simple Google search revealed the following:

Engine: 3S-FE - 87-94

Bore: 86.0mm Stroke: 86.0mm

Compression ratio: 9.8:1

Capacity: 1998 cc

Power: 85Kw - 5600rpm

Torque: 162Nm @ 4400rpm

I gathered this information however was off wikipedia, so it's credibility is questionable.

There aren't any sensitive sensors in the intake path of the 3s-fe, so you are safe there. You won't gain much in horsepower or mileage from a drop-in filter though.

The 3s-fe was rated at 115 from the factory. Unless yours is in great shape, it has probably lost some of that over the years...

From all the research that I did before buying mine the oil issue only occurs when you reoil your filter yourself and put too much oil on it and dont allow it enough time to dry. That being said I have one in my Cam granted its a V6, I really dont feel like the filter really helped with any power gains. It is really nice to have a filter thats going to last a million miles cause we all know a Gen 2 will definately last that long.

Oh I suggest you look into kool blue air filters. From what I read they filter out just as well as K&N filters but they're like 10 bucks cheaper. Same concept as the K&N filters, Oil soaked cotton fibers. Hope this helps!

Above, the person mentioned re-oiling it... If its too wet, it may mess up your o2 sensor.
