89 with Tranny issues

So one of my co-workers is running an 89, 2.0, 5mt. He is not a car guy in the least, but i brought up gas mileage to him, since i used to have a 90 camry that was almost exactly the same, and he told me that he only gets about 26 mpg. i said that he should be doing better than that, and he told me the reason is because when it is in 5th gear, if he lets off the gas, it pops out of gear. i told him i would ask around about a relatively cheap fix for this, so here i am.

if he holds the stick in place, it will stay in gear when he lets off the gas. it is only 5th gear that pops out.

any suggestions as to fixing it, or would it be better to replace it altogether? how about a tranny rebuild?

sounds like something is really wrong with the tranny... may be the syncros are gone
