*Visitor* what do you think of the stock power of your cars?

I was looking at maybe getting a camry instead of a cressida for mpg reasons. What do you guys think of the torque of your cars? I've read there have been complaints of it feeling underpowered, but what do you think?

I had my '88 LE 4-cyl for 6 years.

It wasn't fast, nor torquey, but I got 30 MPG, so I was happy.

My car was a 4-speed ECT automatic and it was geared pretty high (which helped the fuel economy). At 60 MPH, I remember the engine was only turning at 2050 RPM.

It felt the most gutless at low RPMs in 2nd gear.

With a 5-speed manual, it's probably a little peppier.

I noticed you live in Dallas. Unlike Seattle and its suburbs where we have hills (some long, some short), I don't think it will be that big of an issue.

what power?

haha jk.

i have an 86, and it only has 78k right now. It gets up pretty quick if i need it too. But on the interstate you have to stay on the gas pretty heavy or put it in o/d. but its so reliable, so idc about the power. and the mpg is great.

In this day and age for me it's...

MPG > Power

.... (90% of the time :p)

As far as the Camry vs Cressida... The Camry would be cheaper to maintain, doesn't get BHG's as easy :p, gets better mileage, and you'd have many more to choose from over the Cressida.... although I did see a really really nice pearl white Cressida that was just being sold when I drove by it yesterday.

I recently sold my mkiii supra (BHG), and bought a 91 camry as a replacement. The camry doesn't have the torque of the 7m, but it has plenty of power to get up to highway speeds no problem. You'll need to drop a gear to go over hills sometimes, but other than that I'm pleasantly surprised by how quick it is. Weight has a lot to do with it, its a good 800 lbs less than the supra. The better gas mileage is the real winner though. 35 mpg highway vs the supras 24. I save about $10 a week on gas.

If you want to save on gas I suggest you get the I4 camry cause I have the V6 and I get about 22mpg combined highway and city driving. Thats going to be around the same mpg that your going to get out of the cressida. But my good old camry has been really reliable and I get a fair amount of power out of her.

The 4-cylinder 5-speed is the best of both worlds... it is as fast as the V6 auto and gets better gas mileage than any other Camry option. You have to flog it a bit to get up to speed but it is fine (I drove one for years!).

My 4-cylinder auto Alltrac Camry is slow though...

i had a 90 camry for about 6 years with the 5 speed in it and i tried racing it. i could beat the little hondas that had the coffee can exhaust off the line (because they had no low end at all from lack of backpressure). it wasn't fast, but i also used it to take 700 lbs of concrete home and it made it just fine. it does what is has to do, but it isnt spectacular, but it does good on mileage as well.

The power band isn't too bad for such a car, and you definately get used to it. Mine has a 4 cyl. automatic. It's got plenty of power for average commuting, but not much power in reserve for "fun", unless you get one with a 5-speed.

hey welcome,

when you say you want to choose a camry over a cressida theres a few things,
is the mpg the only factor?

and also what year cressida, and what style camry.
I4 saves gas, but of course for better gas mpg you sacrifice power.
V6 is nice, power mpg is not too bad, little hard to work on, but other wise reliable.

and now for the cressida, mx73 or mx83?

the mx73 with the 5mge is reliable, not prone to bhg, but check the oil, they do burn alittle, and are pron to rod knock. if not taken care of. mpg is about the same as a V6 but i would say the 5m is a better motor.

the mx83 has the 7mge and this is pron to bhg, and it will have a bhg. gas mpg is little worse. but the motor has more power and tq than then 5m, of course, 2.8l vs 3.0l.

best mpg of course is I4 everything else theres not much of a difference.

i actually barly post but i thought this was the perfect topic. cause ive had experience with camrys and cressidas

my 91 2.0/auto is fairly peppy since i did the full tune-up and t-belt overhaul..i just readjusted the transmission downshift cable and its really made the car feel ALOT better...the car gets 25 mpg around town and 33-35 mpg hiway...great car.
