2nd Generation i'm having trouble starting again - Please Help!

I've just had a rebulit starter and new battery replaced 2 months ago, and today I can't get it to start again. After it clicks for a few minutes it becomes silent with all the lights still showing on my dashboard. What could be the cause for this? My mechanic can't seem to find the real problem either besides trying to empty my wallet by telling me to replace all the related parts my is an automatic, 4 banger. 87'

Any comments and thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thx

If solenoid plunger is clicking (make sure it is the solenoid not the relay) and it just makes single click, followed by silence, there are three possibilities:
  • The battery to starter cable has dirty connectors;
  • The rebuild starter is defective (I have seen tons of starters hauled from the junkyard and resold by the chain stores);
  • When mechanic was tightening the battery “big” cable on the starter solenoid, he put too much force causing the stud and the contact inside to move out of place. At first this will work, but it will cause the rapid contact pitting, resulted in no start condition.

If the solenoid makes many clicks (like cricket), the problem lies in the control circuit such as neutral safety switch or related.
On my car the starter made no sound at all but worked with remote switch so I put the relay.
