If you want to go to the trouble go get one at a junk yard and try a few things. I would try dipping the end with the rubber sleeve into hot water and see if it would expand enough to slip off (kind of like a bicycle handle bar grip). If something works then you can work on yours. If not, you only loose the junk one. The last thing you might try is to cut the junk one open lengthwise and see if you can discover a trick.
