2nd Generation

There's a diagnostic connector inside the engine compartment. You jump certain terminals with a paper clip and it flashes the code. Do a search in this forum. There's tons of info.

thanks!
So i jumped E1 and TE1 and check the light...all it did was flash repeatedly. I sat there for 30seconds and it kept flashing. Any ideas why?

if it was flashing on and off with half of a second interval, it means no codes were detectedand no codes are stored.

ok thanks!

So i found my old Haynes manual from my CELICA and was reading some info on checking the coil and TPS and they list the 3s-fe motor, which is what i have (think).

I checked the primary resistance on the coil with 2 different digital multimeter's and found the following:
- one read 1.0 ohms and the other 0.8 ohms
According to the celica book, the 3s-fe should be from 0.4 to 0.5ohms

Secondary resistance was 9.5k ohms and 9.8k ohms; celica book has a typo and lists the 3s-fe motor twice one being 10.2-13.8 k ohms and the other 7.7-10.4k ohms. So i'm thinking the ladder is the correct numbers for comparison.

TPS:
This is where the book had conflicting illustrations. It shows a pic of the 3s-fe tps with 3 pins....well mine has 4 pins similar to the 3s-ge in the book. So i check for connectivity between 3rd and 4th pin, with the throttle butterfly at .02 inch , with nothing. I opened it up all the way and still no connectivity

So what i've found is the primary resistance is double of the celica book and the tps isn't indicating any connectivity.

Can anyone please confirm these numbers if possible, or provide some feedback if i'm on the right track?
Does it look like the ingnition coil is toast? or the tps?

Also this car does have command start installed. I know some places use the tps to read that the car is started. I'm hoping it has nothing to do with that.

Sorry for the long post, but i really need to get this car working 100% for my mother.

DR any advice?????

Go to www.camrystuff.com , select Generation 2, download the EFI file, go to page FI-37 and follow instruction how to check TP sensor.

ok, so the coils primary resistance cold was 0.7ohms, and the tolerance is 0.3-0.46. Would a coil with a higher resistance cause this surging effect?

I always thought if a coil was bad it just dies out.

The borderline coil has traces if electrical arching in the upper side directly below 4 pole reluctor on the distributor shaft. It causes random misfire during the acceleration; at idling speed it still performs fairly well.

Thanks again Doc!
I will replace the coil this weekend and will post back with the results.

On a side note the tps seems to be ok, i had to adjust it abit to get connectivity at e1-idl post @ .02in...but it didn't seem to make a diff.
