I am trying to diagnose my transmission and torque converter. Can someone with a 2nd gen. camry v6 w/auto tell me the rpms for 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70 mph. Also i know this is weird, but i think the trans dipstick is wrong. can someone take a pick of the auto trans dipstick and post it. thanks.
that makes no sense, right after 45mph or so it will hop into 4th when the car is at cruise, my camrys go into 4th weather they are warmed up or not but yours may need the motor warmed up first
i didn't say anything about 4th gear engagement. i said i am trying to diagnose the TORQUE CONVERTER. the lock up is dependent on trans temperature, and will cause slightly higher rpms when cold, even if you are in 4th gear. trans fluid takes a bit longer to warm up than engine temp, especially with a tranny cooler. if your camrys are the 4cyl, then they probably do not have electronic lock up or a tranny cooler, which is less problematic.
its the a140e trans in all, mine has the cooler in the radiator, just took my 90 to lunch and it went into 4th and locked up on the first trip even pretty cold, I have a tach in it and watched it to be sure, you think that yours isnt locking?
the v6 has the A504E. A104E is for the 4cyl. the cooler is in the radiator in mine as well, but yours is not gonna have the numbers i need. i beleive its not locking, just decreasing slippage to the point right before lock up.
You should just be able to move your foot on and mostly off the gas and watch if the tach goes up and down with throttle applied or road speed... Also, if you take your foot all the way off the gas, the RPMS should drop slightly as the torque converter lets go, and jump up slightly when you put your foot back on the gas as it locks up.
I have an A540-based auto in my Alltrac Camry (from the factory), and it locks up halfway through 2nd gear and all of 3rd and 4th. It seems to shift the same warm or cold (though I haven't driven it below freezing yet). Based on what I have seen in the repair manuals, this is how the V6 auto should work also.
