Noob starter question?

Is it possible for a starter to do fine when bench tested but click and not turn over when installed in the car.

From your question I presume that that is what happened. So, evidently, it is.

A single click indicates that the solenoid contacts are worn. There are kits available to replace these and there are several previous posts that detail how to do it (search both the Gen 1/2 and the Gen 3/4 forums). Often tapping the starter with a hammer or wrench will get it to work in this condition. I would speculate that you jiggled it enough before the bench test to get it to work.

Multiple clicks when you turn the key are indicative of a low battery.

I just scrolled down to your other post. Why are you double posting?

If you are no longer getting the single click, just what are you getting? If your car seems totally dead you may have blown a fuse or there may be a broken wire like DoctorJ said.

If you're going to continue please let one of these threads die.

YES, this is often the case.


#1 change your starter contacts
#2 recharge your battery and remove and dry your spark plugs
---------your engine is flooded if you tried to start the car multiple times and only got a click, the fuel pump keeps running while you do this.
