Question Engine Knocking/tapping on Camry??

Hey,
As i said i need to know what the noise is, i was told by my mechanic friend it could be tappets i have no idea. My car is a 1991 Gen2 Camry with the 3sfe 2.0l engine, the engine currently has done 223,000 miles or 360,000 kms and at 190,000 miles i got the engine rebuilt with new head gasket, piston rings and other stuff. The tapping noise gets louder when the car is hot or after driving it for a while. Also my mechanic friend said it could noisy lifters but hes not sure if my car has lifters or not, does my car have lifters?

Thanx any Help is appreciated.

No lifters on a 3S-FE. The lobes on the cam push directly on top of buckets which fit over the valves.

What your hearing is probably valve tick.

I have an similar issue with my 2VZ-FE. The ticking gradually gets more louder as the engine gets hotter or when nearing the normal operating temp. Is there a way to quiet it down?
