Transmission Rebuild

I have not had much luck using salvage yard transmissions on a 1990 Camry that uses the A140E transmission. I am considering rebuilding the transmission myself ( I am also to cheep to pay$1,800.00 for a rebuilt transmission). My main concern is, what specialized tooling is required to requild the A140E? I am assuming that I will be using one the master rebuild kits. I have to nail down the tooling question before I make a final decision.

Any input would be appreciated

I'd start by buying a Toyota factory manual. Also find a good source of parts BEFORE you start tearing things apart...what if you have it apart and you cant find a a part you need to finish? Good luck!

Kevin,

Have you tried these guys? Japan Direct http://www.usedengine.com/Default.aspx
They are in Raleigh. I bought a 3sefe from them, $750 free delivery and the engine was like brand new inside and out. It looks like it has 30,000 miles on it .

After getting the manual, clean transmission exterior
You may need to remove the valve body first and work on it as this is the "brain" of the transmission and you need to be attentive to detail and not tired , so you will not nick the delicate metal to metal sealing surfaces. After it done (may take several hours; but do not worry about the time ,worry about what are you doing) seal it in the plastic bag and proceed to the gears / clutches. If you are not overhauling the differential and the intermediate shaft, no special tools are needed but you will do need compressed airto test the hydraulic passages

Success at last

Well the transmission god has at last smiled on me. After three tries we found a used transmission that works and it seems to work well. I appreciate the input I received from everybody.

If nothing else, I have become a bit of an expert at removing and installing Camry automatic transmissions.
