2S and 5S Engine Interchangeability

Hi,
Wondering if any in the group have experience with parts compatibilty of the early 2S Camry engines with the later 5S engines. I'm considering a swap, of-sorts, with the thought of using a 2S cylinder head on a 5S block. This should permit retention of all the sensor/electircal hookups in my now stock original 1985 Camry (in 2S form) - with a potential gain in power displacement of the 5S block. Thanks...

you wanna use the 5s block and the 2s head ? You might gain some power just because its bigger in displacement. If i were you i would consider swapping over the entire 5sfe engine and trans that way youll gain about 40 HP and torque over the old 2se.

Hi All,
Thanks for your great input to the question about 2S/5S interchangeability. I certainly appreciate your views that the 5S engine is the better of the two, and would agree it would be the best complete swap simply viewed from that point. However, I'd still like to entertain the prospect of interchanging the 2S head with the 5S block and would like to get facts along this line. Will the 2S head bolt up? Are there any internal clearance problems (valves, pistons, gasket) once mounted? Is the block deck height higher on the 5S - which might pose timing belt issues? Are the external mounting bosses for motor mounts and ancillaries in the same locations, etc...? Sorry for being so stubborn about this after all of your great input...It's just better to have all of the facts specific to the original question: Do 2S and 5S engine parts interchange? And if so, to what extent? THANKS AGAIN!

Should be able to zap the head right on there really. It should potentially realize SOME gains but I dont think it will be signifigant.

Even if the pistons are a different shape it scouldnt matter enless the timing belt breaks (dont do that).

Ive used a 1988 carbed 4AF block with all 1997 4AFE accesories and head, EVERYTHING except the block and rotating assembly. Even though the pistons were a bit different it went togerther great and ran just fine.

Again if I were you I would get a used 5sfe from a 95 Camry or something like that, not just because of the power gains but because its a much more current design and much easier to get parts and gaskets for it will fit in place of your old 2se because its pretty much just a dohc 16 valve version of that engine.

so are you saying that the 5sfe swap is a direct swap. just bolt it into the current motor mounts?

or is there alot of customization involved?
