1985 valve tick problem

I just got a 1985 with 140K. It has sat for 3 years, and was driven short trips only prior. Has loud valve tick that comes and goes, seems to happen mostly when engine is about 1/2 way warmed up. I doubt valves have ever been adjusted, and I will do that. But since this is not a constant tick, but comes and goes, I think it is something else. Ideas?

I would assume it is the 2SE. You got an audio clip of the sound? Hows the oil in that car?

I will try to make an audio clip of it. It is a 2SE. I doubt the noise is piston slap.

I am suspicious that it might be a sludge problem that doesn't allow enough oil to get to the valves. Have you pulled the valve cover to inspect the insides? Sea Foam in the oil might help...

I am thinking the problem perhaps is : One or more sticky valves? The car sat for several years after all. Try an additive like seafoam or marvel mystery oil and a couple oil changes in a row.

If this doesnt do the trick, it might not even hurt to remove the valve cover and soak the valves around the valve guides with seafoam, and let it sit overnight. Then run the engine for a few minutes, then do an oil change. This might free up a sticking valve, if thats what the noise is.

Gosh, I hate to see how my top end looks. All I saw from the small hole when replacing the PCV valve was a nightmare (a lot of black specks). Blame that from my uncle.

i highly doubt you will find a chevy rocker arm under the valve cover but if it is a stuck valve the shim might have came out from under the cam that sits on top of the bucket that covers the spring, thing to do is on each valve turn the cam so the lobe is pointing up and take a wood hammer handle and put it on the bucket and push down a little and see if it moves easily, just watch out for the shim

I've changed the oil with Shell Rotella 5W-40 synthetic, plus 6 oz. of Seafoam. The Rotella is formulated for commercial vehicles and it has a better detergent package than most other oils. I had good luck with it helping a Nissan VG30 engine that had a similar problem. It is API SL rated. We'll see what it does for the Toyota.

The 2SE is single cam, with rocker arms and "lash adjuster" according to a diagram I found at autozone.com. I snagged a 1985 repair manual from ebay, and as soon as it arrives I'll pull the valve cover to investigate further.

Since it has rocker arms opening the valves, this means the valve clearance is probably adjustable. So why not pull the valve cover and check the clearance, if you know how? The engine needs to be hot or warm before you do this.
Also i'd squirt some seafoam around the valves as long as the valve cover was off. It might help loosen any crud in the valve guides.
