4 cyl to 6 cyl engine swap.

Hi. I have an 87 camry 4 cyl/auto. I have an opportunity to get a rolled 91 6 Cyl/auto for free. Would the 6 cyl tranny hook up to my 4 cyl engine? Would it be easy to install the 6 cyl/tranny combo in the 87? Would the computer/harness stuff match? I'm trying to decide if I want this free car. Thanks!

the tranny will bolt on.. but you'll need new axles.. since they're different for the I4 and V6... engine won't bolt on.. different motor mounts... also harness won't work... also you'll have to use the V6 ECU. and make a hybrid harness for it... not worth the trouble if u ask me

Don't do it. Too much chop-and-mod to make it a reasonable swap.

Take the free car and part it out, assuming you have the space to store it and the patience to deal with the public.

Or, take the free car and scrap it. I don't know about your region but the scrap company I work for is paying $250/ton right now for scrap vehicles. A V6 Camry would net you about $375...

i concur...its not particularly easy swapping in a new engine of the exact same kind as the old one. Add in a non-factory engine to the mix and you're asking for an expensive, troublesome hassle that may not even work right.
Swap in another engine of the same kind or rebuild the old one if its worn out. If it isnt, leave it alone.

your gonna need the entire powertrain, trans, axles, hubs struts and radiator and pretty much everything ahead of the firewall, but if it ran good and isnt torn up, go for it

I would either scrap and hope to get atleast 300 for the scrap. or take it apart and sell the engine/trans. Hell you could even put up listings on ebay and sell the parts one by one, that way you would make more money in the long run.

Man, from the work I've done on the 1MZ, you'd be better-off dropping a big block into a 1968 Mini Minor. If you think the 2VZ (2.5L)is hard to mod onto 3SFE mounts, the 1MZ--at 3L--is a Rubik's Cube. Bad, bad, bad idea...

Yeah your better off just going with a bigger 4cylinder or a high performance 4 cylinder.

atleast then you have room to move around when something goes wrong and you need to install new parts.

Me personally I would like to see the newer 2.4 vvti (160 HP) in one of our 2nd gen camrys. If I could burn rubber in it while in a 3300 LB 2002 camry LE
4 speed automatic. Imagine what it could do in our cars thats atleast 500 pounds lighter ?! It could easily match or beat the 2.5 v6 and get much better gas mileage than it can because it has variable valve timing in a much lighter car.

The 2vz-fe, 3vz-fe and the 1 or 3mz-fe are all about the same size, externally and should all be about equally difficult to get in the gen2 Camry... You only have to do one custom mount on the MZ motors.

As for the 3s-gte, it is significantly more difficult to work on than the 3s-fe. Check out all the room in my engine bay:
