1991 Camry Valve Cover

Hi Everyone,
I recently brought my daughter a 1991 Camry. There is a valve cover leak on this car so I thought I would give it a tune up and chage the valve cover gasket.
Upon inspection, I noticed that there wasn't any screws holding this cover on The engine is a 2.0 liter. I couldnt see too good on the back side. I tried to feel for some screws but didnt feel any. The front and sides do not have any screws or screwholes. Just wondering if anyone else knows what to do.

Thanks for any information.

The rockingcajun!

Remove the spark plug sockets from the spark plug tubes in the middle of the valve cover. You should see 1 large nut screwed onto each spark plug tube (4 total), this is how the cover is held on.

Snug down the nuts but not too much, torque is about 13 ft-lbs.

It takes a 30mm socket and torque it down to only 17 ft lb. Before you remove the tube gaskets make a note of how they are positioned and which tube that they are on. Reinstall them the way you found them It would be best if you also replace the gaskets under each nut, if you do again put them on in the same orientation as the ones you removed. The manual goes into more detail.

if you do change the valve cover gasket just change the spark plug tube gasket at the same time... an extra 12$ is cheap insurance

So is it 13 or 17ft-lbs guys? I don't want to crack the nuts.

Thanks.

I know it's 17 on the 5SFE engine. I would check a factory service manual for the generation 2 Camry to be certain. You can go over to the Camry forum on Automotiveforums.com and get the manual there. They are stickied at the top of the forum and are available for free downloading.

pull em down until the tubes are level with the top side of the nut and be sure not to catch an injector wire under the cover and after a month tighten the nuts again
