Quick A140E ATF question please...

Hey all,

Just swapped the transmission in '87 Camry (A140E)

Do I just add fluid into the dipstick tube or do I have to add fluid somewhere on the side of the transmission.

Thanks,

DJ

I have had a lot of recent experience swapping our A140 transmissions in a Camry

You have to check the fluid in two different places. The first place you add fluid is through the dipstick.

Secondly, make sure you have 1.6 Liters of ATF in the differential portion of the transmission.

If the differential does not have ATF, I doubt you will get even 10 miles of use out of your transmission.

This differential is a seperate compartment and is filled seperately. There is a drain plug at the bottom of the differential and a fill plug about half way up the side of it.

I also recommend about 1 qt of ATF in the Torque Converter prior to installing the transmission.

Hey,

That is exactly what I am asking. I filled the transmission through the dipstick tube but didn't put anything into a separate compartment. I noticed the second drain plug.

Only have driven it about 13 miles. Glad I checked with you all. Will look over the tranny I pulled to find the fill up place.

Hey,

&*#$%)@@$!!!

Hope I haven't ruined it. Found the fill plug. It is toward the bacof the tranny back and down from where the speedo cable attaches.

Do you use ATF of gear oil?

Thank you fro the response!!

My car got 10000 mi on nearly empty differential (as long as the driven gear can splash the fluid around), the differential will not froze up but all components will wear at accelerated rate. The plug is located on the diff cover, near the rear mounting bracket, facing the firewall; it is 17 mm hex, removed with offset 17 mm box end wrench slipped in between the diff. cover and suspension crossmember.

Hey Dr. J -

Thanks for the shout out. I found the plug on the tranny I replaced. Looks like it will be easier to pull the cross member to get to the plug.

Fortunately, the tranny I bought (from Cherry Auto) Still had the diff. fluid. It looked like motor oil but at least I wasn't driving it dry. Will use the pump I change the boat's lower unit oil to fill the diff.

Thanks again for the help.

Respectfully,

DJ

You're right, it's much easier to simply remove the cross-member to get more room at the plug. Plus it'll give you a chance to add LOTS of anti-seize compound to the threads on those cross-member bolts...they like to rust pretty badly.

And diverjeff, your signature kicks ass...I'm living your life, apparently. My fiancée keeps trying to lay down the law but I seem not to hear her Next week I'm buying two 1990 Celicas...one with a shot body and the other with a seized crank bearing. $600 for both, two days' labour to swap-in the good engine, and I have a nice car to fart around in. Oh, there'll be hell to pay...
